Working Mother magazine on Monday
released its annual report on the top 100 places to
work, which grades companies applying to be on the
list by their policies on paternity leaves, child
care and elder care, as well as the number of women
holding top jobs and overall flexibility, the
AP/Philadelphia Inquirer
reports.
Abbott Laboratories,
Bon Secours Richmond Health System,
Ernst and Young,
HSBC Bank USA,
IBM,
JPMorgan Chase,
Patagonia,
PricewaterhouseCoopers,
Principal Financial Group and
SC
Johnson and Son are listed as the top 10
companies using the five criteria (Tong,
AP/Philadelphia Inquirer, 9/26). In order for
a benefit to be counted by the magazine, every
employee at the company must be eligible for it,
Working Mother Editor in Chief Suzanne
Riss said. According to
Reuters, health
insurance for part-time workers, compressed work
weeks, job-sharing, elder care and child care are
among the benefits offered by most companies on the
top 100 list, but such benefits are not offered by
most companies across the country. "What was
impressive this year were the leave policies," Riss
said, adding, "We saw nice improvement in paid
adoption and paid paternity leaves." Seventeen of
the companies on the list are part of the health
care industry, and 28 are financial services firms
(Stern, Reuters, 9/22). According to
the magazine, companies increasingly are concerned
that qualified women will resign if benefits are not
upgraded. Eighteen new companies made the 2006 list
(AP/Philadelphia Inquirer, 9/26).
NPR's "Morning
Edition" on Wednesday included an interview with
Carol Evans, founder and CEO of Working Mother
Media, about the report (Inskeep/Montagne, "Morning
Edition," NPR, 9/27). The complete segment is
available
online in RealPlayer.
